Piramal Healthcare UK Ltd. specialises in Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and oral solid drug product development. They offer a wide range of services, including clinical supply, commercial manufacturing and packaging, catering to both innovators and generic pharmaceutical companies. The facility adheres to stringent inspection standards, holding approvals from the USFDA and MHRA.
THE CHALLENGE
A section of Piramal Healthcare UK Ltd.'s extensive estate featured a goods warehouse that was equipped with outdated fluorescent lighting systems. The 296 Twin 58W T8 fluorescent tubes in place consumed 129W per fixture, and they required annual maintenance at an added cost of £25 per fixture. Rising energy costs, labour expenses, and the difficulty in sourcing replacement tubes drove the need for a lighting upgrade. Furthermore, the client aimed to improve the lux levels across the warehouse, particularly in areas with fixtures mounted at a height of 11.14 meters amidst high racks to ensure a safe and productive workspace for employees.
THE SOLUTION
To address the warehouse's lighting needs, Glowled®, a specialist in energy-efficient lighting systems, collaborated with Cree Lighting Europe to deliver a comprehensive lighting solution. The design centered around the installation of 106 units of Cree Lighting's latest high bay fixture, Industria, and 6 units of CPY. Industria, introduced to the market in 2022, was selected for its energy efficiency and modular design, which allows for potential luminaire upgrades and refurbishments, giving customers the option to extend Industria's useful product lifetime to up to 20 years. The project leveraged the High Rack (HR) optic option of Industria, perfectly suited for this warehouse application. By transitioning from fluorescent to LED technology, Glowled managed to reduce the fixture count from 296 to 112, while still achieving the target of 150 lux.
To maximise energy savings, the luminaires were equipped with motion detectors and a dimming program from Legrand. This program operates the fixtures at 80% of full power and incorporates a 5-minute timeout setting for optimal energy efficiency.
THE RESULTS
The outcome of the lighting transformation project far exceeded the expectations of Piramal Healthcare UK Ltd. The benefits were twofold: a substantial reduction in energy costs, estimated at £45,000 per year, and an additional yearly savings of £4,000 in maintenance expenses. This translates to a rapid project payback period of less than two years. In addition to these cost savings, the improved quality of light not only enhances the well-being and safety of employees but also contributes to a more productive work environment.
